HSHA has a strong foundation in the local community, providing a variety of services including low-cost spay/neuter clinics, low cost vaccine clinics, examinations, and affordable medication. We have recently added 4,000 square feet to our facility for the expansion of our medical operations to include additional surgeries, x-rays, and other advanced veterinary services affordable to low income pet owners. Our objective is to provide necessary veterinary services to as many animals in our community as possible.
Coordinates and directs shelter medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices
Makes recommendations and collaborates with the management and other staff in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of sheltered animals
Oversees the maintenance of shelter and clinic drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements
Provides leadership to HSHA personnel
Maintain effective communication and provide guidance to staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter
Oversees that appropriate shelter medical personnel are certified in euthanasia
Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra- and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to HSHA
Performs the duties of a staff veterinarian, including but not limited to:
Provides medical services to all shelter and clinic animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments
Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter and client owned animals.
Ensures appropriate medication is administered by shelter veterinary staff as directed
Advises, performs or oversees euthanasia performed within the shelter
Provides on-call services for shelter animal emergencies
Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses. Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of HSHA

Current license in the State of Pennsylvania to practice veterinary medicine
Current DEA license
Maintenance of malpractice/professional liability insurance
One year experience as a veterinarian preferred. Special preference given to those with experience in shelter medicine and those with high volume spay neuter experience.
Ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner at all times

The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) is a nonprofit animal shelter dedicated to bettering the lives of animals in Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties. Our 20,000+ squarefoot facility regularly provides shelter to over 800 animals while they await adoption. Our veterinary team provides much needed spay/neuter clinics and vaccines to low income households at affordable low costs. HSHA has also recently added nearly 4,000 square feet to expand our low cost veterinary services to include x-rays and additional surgeries.
