The University of Minnesota – College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM) is excited to advertise for a Medical Oncologist (board certified or board-eligible by the ACVIM) or an oncologist trained in both medical and radiation oncology to join our dynamic Oncology team. The successful candidate will join the comparative Animal Cancer Care and Research Program as a member of the UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team, which is composed of 3 medical oncologists, 1 radiation oncologist (also boarded in medical oncology), 1 surgical oncologist, and 5 medical oncology residents. The Clinical Oncology Team strives to advance clinical care, research, training, and teaching in a supportive and collaborative academic environment. The UMN-CVM announces an outstanding opportunity for a contract (non-tenure, clinical) track full time (100% appointment) faculty position in Oncology at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Minimum qualifications include: DVM/VMD or equivalent veterinary degree, successful completion of Oncology residency with eligibility for, or certification by, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Oncology and evidence of outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be eligible for Minnesota state veterinary licensure. Preference will be given to candidates with a history and interest in collaborative patient care, comparative clinical research, veterinary student instruction, and resident training.
Position Description & Opportunities:
The successful candidate will join a diverse, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking team of faculty, residents, and researchers and will have the opportunity to be a driving force in its expansion. The Clinical Oncology team is composed of 2 ACVIM-Oncology board certified faculty, 1 Board-eligible oncologist, 1 ACVR-Radiation Oncology board certified faculty who is also an ACVIM-Oncology Diplomate, 1 ACVS-board certified surgical oncologist, 5 medical oncology residents, and 7 veterinary technicians.
The percentage of time allocated for clinical service, teaching, and research is negotiable, but a minimum of 32 weeks per year of clinical responsibilities is expected. Other job responsibilities include participation in clinical research, residency training, scholarly activities, personal development and discipline/non-discipline related service to the CVM and other veterinary-related professional organizations. Primary duties will be determined through negotiations with the Department Chair and are dependent on the candidate’s professional goals.
Clinical Oncology Services:
The UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team provides comprehensive, compassionate care and sees a large and diverse caseload making the VMC an ideal location for a progressive clinician interested in clinical trials.
Clinicians in the UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team are supported by surgery, radiology, dentistry and oral surgery, clinical pathology, anesthesia, and pharmacy and routinely collaborates with internal medicine, cardiology, emergency and critical care, neurology, nutrition, and dermatology.
Radiation and medical oncology work collaboratively from a large, windowed oncology room. Within oncology, there is abundant space for clinical work, with an adjacent, dedicated, low-traffic chemotherapy administration room, cytology screening room, and student/resident rounds space. The oncology team is supported by 7 veterinary technicians, many of whom are cross trained in other specialty areas.
The VMC currently houses a 6 MV Varian linear accelerator (6 MV photons, 6-12 MeV electrons) with on board EPID and CBCT, independent control room with contouring (MIM Maestro) and treatment planning software (Pinnacle, Philips), and is supported by medical physicists from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical School. Customized electron cutouts can be made on site. The service also has a Strontium-90 probe for clinical use.
To provide superior cancer imaging, the VMC is actively upgrading its 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner with plans to upgrade its 64-slice CT scanner in the future.

There are many opportunities for collaborative research within the VCS department and the CVM. Notable examples include the “One Medicine, One Science” Comparative Medicine Signature Program, in which Oncology is a well-represented cornerstone, and the CVM Resident and Graduate Student Grants program. Across both the clinical and research arms of the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program, there is a robust basic and translational research program with active clinical trials. The latter is supported by the UMN-CVM Clinical Investigation Center, which provides technical infrastructure and assistance with clinical research opportunities.
The opportunities for research extend far beyond the CVM to include all five units of the Health Sciences, namely the schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and Dentistry. As a member of the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program, there are further interdisciplinary research opportunities within the Masonic Cancer Center (an NIH-designated comprehensive cancer center) and the Department of Radiation Oncology in the UMN Medical School.
Numerous resources, including abundant intramural funding, career development, and scholarship opportunities are available for junior faculty to establish exciting collaborative and clinical research experiences. There is also an extensive support network through the CVM Research Office to assist in the identification and submission of intramural and extramural grant applications.
Teaching and Training:
The UMN-CVM Clinical Oncology Team program currently trains 5 medical oncology residents with training activities including weekly Journal Club, Cytology Rounds, Grand Rounds, and Surgery-Oncology-Pathology Rounds.
Instructional activities include clinical training of DVM students and house officers, and the provision of didactic lectures in the CVM Veterinary and Graduate School curriculums as well as state-wide veterinary communities.
Support and instruction for teaching is provided by the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation (including the Early Career Teaching and Learning Program).
Applied research opportunities in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) allow interested faculty to assess the impact of new and innovative teaching practices.
Leadership training is available through the annual CVM LEADS program.
Opportunities exist to attend regular Masonic Cancer Center seminars and UMN Medical School Oncology Rounds, including those focused on Musculoskeletal Oncology, Sarcomas, Solid Tumors, Brain Tumors, and Cancer Epidemiology.
