The goal of the Externship program at Piedmont Equine is to expose veterinary students to both specialty and ambulatory practice. In exchange for this mentorship, we expect total dedication to the practice and the patients under the practice’s care. We pride ourselves on our ability to engage and teach externs and look forward to having you at our practice. Each extern will rotate through all of the veterinarians in our practice - both in house and on the road. Each extern will work within their respective area to monitor/treat patients and assist with scheduled, daily appointments and emergencies. Direct supervision will be provided. Each extern will actively participate in rounds (daily, in-hospital and weekly, clinic-wide, sit-down case presentations/literature reviews). We have 9 ambulatory veterinarians with special interests varying from emergency services to reproduction to predominantly lameness and chiropractic care. We have a board certified equine ophthalmologist who consistently uses our clinic for surgeries and hospitalized patients. We have two equine surgeons who rotate on the schedule and an internal medicine specialist available as needed for consults on cases. We offer advanced diagnostics and lameness workups in the clinic and we do quite a few in depth sporthorse pre-purchase examinations. The externship is typically a 1-3 week rotation. In order to apply for the internship a one week externship is required prior to application and we encourage all visits to be complete before Labor Day of the year in which they are applying. Housing is provided for externs on site. No vehicle is needed however externs must find transportation to/from the clinic at the beginning/ending of externship. Externs must be enrolled in a veterinary school and are asked to provide one letter of recommendation and a cover letter and resume with their extern application. Those applying for an internship are asked to provide school transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation and must be licensed to practice in the US prior to starting the internship.
