About Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County
The Animal Protective League (APL) is a limited-admission animal shelter and spay/neuter clinic with a focus on ending pet overpopulation, adoptions, community pet wellness and humane education. We find adoptive homes for 2,500 cats and dogs per year, and provide services to an additional 15,000 animals per year including spay and neuter, low-cost vaccines, pet supplies and other services. Our shelter prioritizes intake by sick and injured animals and we routinely take those animals who have nowhere else to go. We have dedicated programs in place for FIV and FELV cats, neonatal cats and dogs, and we routinely care for parvo and ringworm animals. We work with area animal control facilities to take animals slated for euthanasia and give them a second chance at our shelter where they can find loving homes. Our spay/neuter clinic works with over 31 shelter partners in a 90 mile radius to provide low-cost spay/neuter services and offers progressive cat programs such as our barn cat and TNR programs. In addition we serve our community by offering a pet food bank, pet therapy, humane education and many volunteer opportunities.
