The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University invites applications for a faculty position in Large Animal Medicine – Equine Emphasis. Depending upon the qualifications and interests of the applicant, the position will be either a Tenure track or multi-year renewable clinical appointment Health Programs track, available at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level.

We are seeking a candidate interested in transformative work in clinical service, teaching and/or research. The ideal candidate will utilize the resources of MSU to become a world recognized expert in their area and contribute to our goal to making MSU CVM a global destination for veterinary practice, teaching and research. The successful candidate will join the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, one of five CVM departments. The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences serves Michigan’s equine and bovine communities through didactic teaching and clinical service in the DVM program. A recent curriculum redesign embraces a competency-based systems approach to training veterinarians through the development of clinical skills, clinical reasoning, and a case-based approach to learning. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with pre-clinical and clinical students, helping them to bridge the gap between school and clinical practice. Departmental faculty also engage in extension and basic and translational research that range from biomedical research to computation methods and emphasize a One Health approach.

The College has two service units, the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. For substantial part of the responsibilities of the successful candidate will be devoted to daytime clinical duty in the VMC. Primary responsibilities include: 1) daytime clinical duty for both equine and food animal cases; 2) shared back-up duties for after-hours emergency cases; 3) development of strong relationships with referring veterinarians; 4) providing evidence-based teaching, laboratory and clinical instruction to veterinary students and residents; 5) establishing an externally funded research program or developing collaborations with faculty having established research programs (dependent on tenure or health professional track); and 6) participating in state and national outreach and continuing education.

The clinical team consists of 4 ACVS and 3 ACVIM faculty who are also board certified in ACVECC (2) as well as a full complement of board-certified specialists in ACVSMR (2), ACVR, ACVAA, ACVO, and ACVIM-cardiology & neurology. The hospital caseload is approximately 85% equine but includes all other large animal species (15%). Facilities include a fully equipped hospital with 24-hour certified nursing staff, advanced imaging, the Matilda Wilson Pegasus Critical Care and Isolation Facility and the McPhail Equine Performance Center which is fully equipped for advanced sports medicine. https://cvm.msu.edu/research/endowed-chairs/mcphail-dressage-chair/mcphail-equine-performance-center. The position offers exciting opportunities to work in a collaborative environment using state of the art equipment, including CT, MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, ultrasound, digital radiography, and fluoroscopy.

Required qualifications include DVM or equivalent degree, and board certification or eligibility for Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and/or European College of Equine Internal Medicine. The successful applicant will have proficiency in internal medicine as this is an essential component of the position. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment with other faculty members, residents, and staff. Candidates who anticipate a tenure track position should have demonstrated enthusiasm for development of an extramural funded research program as well as passion for educating the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary specialists.
