Southwood Veterinary Clinic is a well-established, progressive, fast paced, growing, 3 doctor, looking for a 4th doctor, mixed animal general and limited exotics practice, located in Jamestown, ND, with one satellite clinic in Carrington ND. We offer many services to provide the best comprehensive care to our patients including Preventative Care, Surgery, Urgent/Emergency Care, Dentistry, In-House Diagnostics (lab and digital radiographs) and Medical and/or Vacation Boarding. We are proud to be a veterinary clinic that has been established in our local and surrounding communities since 1964.
Southwood Veterinary Clinic is located in the James River Valley in Jamestown, ND. The proximity to highways/interstates allows for an easy commute to larger cities such as Fargo and Bismarck. Our schools are diverse, caring, skilled and driven, making it an ideal area to raise a family! Jamestown Reservoir is just on the north side of town and offers 4 seasons of fun and activity: fishing (all year round), boating, kayaking, canoeing, frisbee golf (tough course ?), mountain bike trails, jet skiing, multiple campgrounds and facilities, a sand beach and so much more. The area is also renowned for hunting (bird, large and small animal)/ Jamestown is also home to the worlds largest buffalo and you can actually visit and feed live buffalo here! We have numerous chain, large, small and eclectic restaurants for dining ranging from a fast food burger to amazing wood fired pizza and bison filet mignon.
We’re looking for:
- 3rd or 4th year Veterinary Students from an AVMA accredited institution authorized to work in the United States for an internship lasting 2-6 weeks/according to your college curriculum.
- Compassionate, team player and strong communicator with an appetite for information in small and large animal

What you’ll be doing:
Our externship rotations are designed to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical and communication skills that they have acquired during their clinical preparation. Externs experience the typical caseload of a small and large animal practice. You will be mentored by experienced veterinarians, who will share their areas of expertise. You will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, assist in the management of medical cases, develop your client communication skills, assist in completing medical records (SOAPS) within the time limits of daily practice.

Extern students are expected to be enthusiastic and effective participants in our patient care activities, upholding the professional and ethical standards of our practice.
You must carry professional liability insurance. AVMA PLIT insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA. You can apply for this coverage on their website. Please plan to submit a certificate of coverage prior to your first day of externship. You will not be able to participate until this is received.
