Residency in Food Animal Field Service
The Department of Clinical Studies – New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a residency position in Field Service with a Food Animal emphasis. Requirements for the position include a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree, a minimum of one year of postgraduate experience acceptable to the residency committee, and eligibility for licensure in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Deleware. The position starts July 1, 2022.
The objective of this residency position in Food Animal Field Service is to provide knowledge and clinical proficiency in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of food animal patients, with a focus on medicine, field surgery, reproduction, preventative medicine, and herd health. The residency program is a two-year program that is in accordance with the requirements of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) - Dairy or Food Animal. The Food Animal Field Service team works primarily with dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, and goats with a small number of camelid and swine patients.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in the academic program of the section, including didactic and laboratory teaching of students and training of interns and residents, with a special emphasis on clinical teaching of veterinary students on the Field Service rotation. Although the focus of this position is on clinical service and teaching, the successful candidate will have the opportunity and is encouraged to participate in collaborative clinical research in areas of interest. The resident will rotate with Food Animal Field Service clinicians in the emergency schedule, and will assist in teaching veterinary students and attend and participate in scheduled rounds.
During the first year, the resident will rotate between the Food Animal Field Service and the Pathology service at New Bolton Center. Under the guidance of Board-certified faculty members and staff, the resident will assist or be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients while on the clinical service. In the second year, the resident will continue on Food Animal Field Service and has the option to spend rotations outside of Field Service or in additional off-campus externships related to dairy, beef production, swine production, and small ruminant production.
Daily practice obligations will include cases typical of ambulatory practice including but not limited to: routine bovine herd checks (trans-rectal palpation for pregnancy and sick cow work), field surgery, herd and individual animal health, internal medicine, and preventative medicine. A fully stocked ambulatory truck and ultrasound unit are available. Consultation with other specialists from the New Bolton Center Large Animal Hospital is readily available and welcomed.
Continuation of the residency to the second year is contingent upon satisfactory performance, as determined by the residency committee. The resident is expected to establish and maintain contact with the ABVP and to fulfill the guidelines outlined by the ABVP for residency programs including, but not limited to, case logs, publication in a refereed journal, and a case report for the ABVP. A certificate of completion of the two-year residency program will be issued upon fulfillment of the program requirements and approval of the residency committee.
New Bolton Center is the large-animal campus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and is located 40 miles southwest of the Philadelphia main campus, in beautiful and picturesque Chester County. Our practice serves a diverse population of large and small dairies, small cow/calf beef operations, as well as pet and commercial small ruminant, camelid, and swine operations.
