The successful candidate will join Penn Vet’s existing Section of Cardiology which includes 3 faculty members, 3 residents, 1 research intern, and 2 nurses. The successful candidate is expected to have a history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator. Members of faculty in the Clinician Educator (CE) track yearly perform 31 weeks of clinical small animal patient care in the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical and didactic teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents. The Cardiology Section maintains a robust outpatient and in-house consultation service. A state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery suite is used for interventional cardiology procedures. The Cardiology Section operates in a highly collaborative and outstanding clinical environment within a busy academic teaching hospital.
Clinician Educators also discover new knowledge that advances the field, and this position places a strong emphasis on the clinical research mission. As such, this position offers a unique and outstanding environment for clinical and translational research. The successful candidate will join a team with a considerable research record and resources. The Cardiology Section is supported by extra- and intramural grants and maintains close and productive collaborations with veterinary and biomedical investigators both within and outside of the University, and routinely engages with industry partners to evaluate new diagnostic tests, drugs, and other interventions. The Cardiology Section maintains resources specifically earmarked for the research mission, including recent gifts and funds in excess of $1 million to support studies and personnel. The successful candidate will have access to extensive mentoring by experienced faculty members in order to develop an independent clinical research program and be an academic leader in their field. The Cardiology Section employs a dedicated research intern to facilitate the identification, recruitment, and evaluation of cases enrolled in trials and studies. The Department has a Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center (VCIC) that includes 4 full-time veterinary nurses, as well as financial and administrative staff to support investigators. Adjacent to the School of Veterinary Medicine are world-class biomedical hospitals, including the Perelman School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which provide excellent opportunities for research collaboration as well as professional development involving epidemiology, biostatistics, and trial design.
The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes multiple options for retirement savings and tuition benefits for the candidate’s spouse and/or dependent children. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual who enjoys living and working in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theaters, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia). Philadelphia offers easy access to New York and Washington DC.
