Job Description:
The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (VBSC) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an instructor and academic advisor. This is a non-tenure-track, faculty position on a 48-week academic year appointment with 100% teaching responsibilities in a fixed-term multi-year (3 year) contract with the opportunity and expectation for continued renewal.
Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching several introductory undergraduate courses (VBSC 130 – Understanding human disease, VBSC 421- Comparative anatomy, VBSC 439- Mucosal immunology, VBSC 340- Introduction to human and veterinary public health, VBSC 402W – Biology of animal parasites, VBSC 520 – Pathobiology) and others as assigned on a need basis. Additional responsibilities will include serving as the undergraduate advisor for students within all three undergraduate majors (Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences, Immunology & Infectious Disease, and Pharmacology and Toxicology) in the department of veterinary and biomedical sciences along with primary engagement in undergraduate student orientation, recruitment, and retention programs in the college. The successful candidate will collaborate with the college recruitment director to develop recruitment materials, participate in recruitment events and activities, and outreach programs to guidance counselors, high school instructors, etc. to identify prospective students. This position will also actively participate in college programming and support of students enrolled in other commonwealth campuses.
Qualifications: Qualifications include a V.M.D./D.V.M., M.D., and/or Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, life sciences, or biology discipline and a strong record of teaching scholarship including demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, excellent writing, and oral communication skills. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively as well as engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required.
