Position Summary
The Medical Director of Emergency Services at VESH-Wichita will establish, maintain and promote a standard of excellence in our hospital while presenting a professional image and rapport with our clients, teams, referring veterinarians, and the Wichita community. The Director is responsible for providing medical supervision and supportive leadership supervision for the Hospital while working closely with Hospital Management and Leadership Teams.

Duties and Responsibilities
Standards of Care
Oversees ER medical standards including modifying or establishing medical protocols
Working closely with the Leadership Team and Specialty Services Medical Director to implement the protocols
Act as a liaison for technical staff if they have concerns regarding quality of care, co-workers, or other matters that may compromise compassionate veterinary care
Works with Hospital Management and Leadership Teams to oversee doctor and support staff activities to ensure quality patient care, positive staff relations/teamwork, and efficient service
Oversees administration and ER department case review of client medical complaints and resolves the problems when possible
Oversee and direct monthly DVM meetings in collaboration with Specialty Services Medical Director to discuss updated protocols and policies, case reviews, announcements, and collaborations
Assist in researching new hospital equipment for ER department and ensure compliance of standard operating procedures after implementation
Medical Staff Oversight
Oversee ER hospital patient flow and client care objectives
Prioritize tasks of ER veterinary team to maximize client satisfaction and patient health
Maintains ER DVM schedule to ensure productive and well covered shifts
Assist in orientation and training of newly hired ER doctors, as well as externs and interns, in coordination with the Training Supervisor on the following but not limited to
Procedures
Laboratory services
Teamwork
Equipment/diagnostics
Record keeping and software programs
Communication systems
Patient discharge
Hospital policy, protocols, and standards of care
Client communication and the software systems involved
Overall responsibilities while on duty
Overall expectations of an ER veterinarian
Monitor progress of ER veterinary team and communicate with leaders
Assist ER veterinary team in developing organizational skills and in selecting priorities for the delivery of superior patient care
Complete intern and extern evaluations as required within their specific program
Supports Leadership Team in the development and delivery of training programs
Ensure patient care is delivered as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with clinician’s instructions
Ensure medical records, procedures, OSHA requirements and activities are compliant with VESHW policy as well as local, state, and federal law
Leadership
Maintain and encourage excellence in patient care and effective working relationship with all VESHW veterinarians, support staff, and management teams
Works together with Specialty Services Medical Director as a team in order to appropriately divide duties between departments as well as which to perform together
Rotates with other Hospital Administrators in the on-call schedule
Participation in staff and leadership meetings
Promote an enthusiastic and compassionate team-oriented working environment
Participate in ER doctor disciplinary actions as necessary
Obtain CE routinely to improve own interpersonal, supervisory/managerial, and communication skills
Participation in community events and continuing education events put on by VESHW

Education and Experience Requirements
A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, from an accredited university
Licensure in good standing within the state of Kansas
Maintains continuing education requirements set forth by the state of Kansas
Minimum five years’ experience in emergency medicine
