We are a full service specialty and referral hospital with an expansive ambulatory service based out of Northern California. We have several sister practices and satellite clinics throughout the state as well, each with their own distinct style and pace. Externs typically visit our main hospital in Penryn, but are welcome to schedule time at other locations as well.
In addition to hosting externs year round, we have a Rotating Equine Internship, Non-Traditional Hybrid Internship, and an Emergency & Critical Care Residency program. We welcome externs interested in pursuing further training after graduation, as well as those interested in increasing their equine skillset en route to a mixed animal path.
Please see our Equine Internship and ECC Residency job listings for more information about additional training opportunities after graduation.
A Typical Day:
Externs assist our intern veterinarians with physical exams on all inpatients each morning prior to attending daily stall side rounds at 8AM (held 365 days/year). Additional educational opportunities include twice monthly journal club and weekly Intern/Topic rounds. After rounds, externs are assigned to an ambulatory doctor or in house service for the day. We can tailor these assignments to your specific areas of interest. Participation in after hours emergencies is welcomed but optional. Externs are never expected to assist in overnight treatments as our hospital is staffed by a team of veterinary technicians and assistants 24 hours a day.
To Apply:
Interested applicants should email Dr. Sarah Mercer-Bowyer (smercer@lbemc.com) with a CV, optional brief letter of intent, and your preferred dates.
Currently enrolled veterinary students of all years are welcomed.
