Kentucky Equine Athlete Hospital is a full-service surgical and ambulatory hospital located outside of Louisville, KY.   KEAH has 7 full time veterinarians and 1 part time- with two DACVS and two ACVSMR diplomats.  Dr. Wes Sutter, DACVS/DACVSMR has an active orthopedic and soft tissue surgical case load with 2-3 surgical days scheduled per week with the rest of his time spent on sport medicine/lameness cases.  We offer a full range of lameness diagnostic services including advanced imaging services with MRI, Nuclear scintigraphy, and PET Scan.  We offer the latest in lameness treatments and diagnostics including IRAP, Stem Cell Therapy, PRP, Pro-Stride, traditional joint therapies, regenerative laser, and shock wave therapy. The clinic also offers endoscopy and gastroscopy services.  Our ambulatory veterinarians provide a full range of services from routine herd health care, dentistry, reproductive services (Mare reproductive services, Embryo Flush/Transfer, and Stallion collections for fresh cooled and freezing), lameness/sports medicine, and emergency services.  We offer advanced ophthalmology services with board certified ophthalmologist Dr. Erica Tolar, DACVO.   We have a full in house laboratory including technicians certified to run Coggins tests. 

Our externship offers a great opportunity for veterinary students to gain knowledge and experience in all fields of equine practice; we are a very busy equine practice, and the extern will be exposed to many areas of clinical practice.  Our externs will have the opportunity to observe surgical cases, lameness work ups/treatment, advanced imaging, ride on farm calls with ambulatory veterinarians, and observe ophthalmologic procedures with Dr. Tolar.  We rotate externs through all areas of the clinic, but if they have a particular interest, we try to let them spend more time in that area. We try to allow our externs hands on experiences depending on level of ability, schooling level, clientele, and case load.  Our externships are usually scheduled for 2 weeks blocks, but depending on the schedule we are open to shorter or longer stays.  We offer dormitory style onsite housing for externs (no more than 2 students at a time).  If you are interested in our internship program, scheduling an externship is a great way to get to know the clinic and staff.

Kentucky Equine Hospital was established in 2020 when Dr William Sutter purchased the existing Equine Services Hospital that had been established in the community since 1979. Kentucky Equine Hospital merged with Equine Athlete at the beginning of 2024. Kentucky Equine Athlete Hospital seeks to merge practical expertise with superior clinical care by providing state-of-the-art imaging techniques, lameness evaluations and a surgical center while also providing routine ambulatory and emergency care to our clients and patients.
