Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center and Urgent Care boasts one of the largest, privately
owned general practices in the bay area with a bustling urgent care service to
support emergent pet needs.
Our externship program is available to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students through
1-4 week rotations. Externs will be given the opportunity to shadow veterinarians
through wellness, sick and urgent care appointments. They will develop problem
lists, diagnostic and treatment plans. This allows students to observe client
interactions and the importance of building client relationships while gaining a better
understanding of a comprehensive approach to patient care.
We offer a highly collaborative environment where individuals thrive and patient care
is optimized. Students will also have the opportunity to observe both general and
specialty surgeries, advanced procedures including laparoscopy, endoscopy and
ultrasound as well as dental procedures. Specialty rotations in reproduction, holistic
medicine, cardiology and ophthalmology may also be available depending on the
timing of the externship and a student’s specific interests. Case rounds, radiology
review and ultrasound training.
Dress Code Scrubs, white coat, name tag and/or casual business attire.
Schedule: Students will be scheduled specific times to be assisting in surgery,
diagnostics and/or in the exam room - under the guidance of twenty-one
veterinarians, at one of two veterinary practices in the Tri-Valley area.
Housing & Location: We are located in the Bay Area, off of 680 Freeway and close
to BART. Depending on when you are scheduling your externship with us, we may be
able to arrange transport and housing.
