The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota, invites applications for an outstanding tenure-track or contract (non-tenure) full-time (100% appointment) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in poultry diagnostics at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UMN VDL). The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate consistent with Collegiate and University policies.
The UMN VDL is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians, scientists, educators, companion animal owners, and the livestock and poultry industry by identifying and monitoring emerging diseases and developing new diagnostic methods. The UMN VDL is also the official laboratory for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH).
The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide diagnostic pathology support to cases routinely submitted to the UMN VDL, and deliver comprehensive diagnostic case information in a concise and well-organized manner to the poultry industry, practicing veterinarians, and other animal health professionals. The successful candidate is expected to develop close relationships with poultry veterinarians and producers using their skills and ongoing training to maintain and improve the health of their flocks. Expected service duties range from assistance with routine disease/health monitoring to in-depth case investigations. The ability to interact, communicate, and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential.
The person in this position will be involved in teaching and may have the opportunity to establish a collaborative applied research program in areas such as virology, infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis, control and eradication. Teaching may include participating in the DVM curriculum, graduate and residency programs, and educational outreach programs consistent with the expertise and interest of the candidate. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers and veterinarians.
This position may be located at any of the two VDL MN locations: the main location in St. Paul, or the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory (MPTL) in Willmar MN, which is situated in close proximity to poultry production in Minnesota as well as private and UMN poultry research facilities. Being located in Willmar and working from MPTL is the preferred option. If the new faculty member is located in St. Paul, the faculty member is expected to work closely with the team at MPTL, visit the Willmar facility frequently, and support the poultry industry and the MBAH.
The successful candidate must have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees. The University of Minnesota especially seeks candidates who are interested in contributing to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and outreach. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional diagnostic service, dedication to all levels of education, and contribute to the national prominence of the UMN VDL, VPM Dept, and the University of Minnesota.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. The University of Minnesota provides a generous vacation, sick leave, and benefits package.
Begin: Starting date will be negotiated with the selected candidate.
Qualified applicants should apply online at https://hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/ext/362149 (Job ID: 362149) and include a letter of intent, a diversity statement, curriculum vitae, and a list of three references (with contact information) knowledgeable about the candidate's diagnostic service, research, teaching, and outreach skills. Applicant’s diversity statement should address what contributions exemplify your awareness and sensitivity toward promoting a diverse and inclusive environment. “What have you learned working with diverse populations?”
